Every van life essentials list is written twice: the fantasy version before the build, and the honest version a year in — after half the gadgets have been donated at a trailhead free-box. This is the second version: what actually earns its space in a few cubic meters, category by category.
The non-negotiables
- Power: a battery/solar setup sized to your real loads (fridge, laptop, lights) plus one good headlamp per person. Skip the gadget chargers; standardize on USB-C.
- Water: more capacity than you think, simpler plumbing than you want. A 20L jerry can that always stays full is the veteran move.
- Sleep: whatever it takes — van life runs on sleep quality. Real bedding beats sleeping bags for full-timers.
- Heat & air: a diesel heater and a roof fan do more for livability than any other two purchases.
The textiles (the part everyone underrates)
A van interior is 80% soft surfaces, and they take the abuse of a house compressed into a hallway. Organization: the boring winner
Everything in the van needs a home or it becomes ballast. Collapsible crates, packing cubes for clothes, one “junk drawer” bin you allow yourself. The rule of thumb from full-timers: if it hasn't been used in six weeks and it isn't safety gear, it leaves.
What didn't make year two
Portable espresso machines, gadget multitools, the projector, the second camp chair set, anything marketed as “van life aesthetic” that doesn't also do a job. The boho interior guide makes the case that style should come from things you were keeping anyway — the seats, the rug, the textiles — not from objects that only decorate.
