The three beach-bag schools
Mesh: sand falls through — genuinely clever — but so does everything smaller than a sunscreen bottle, and wet items drip through onto car seats. Straw and rattan: unbeatable in photos, tragic in salt air; fibers dry brittle and snap within a season or two. Heavy canvas: carries the real load, shakes out sand nearly as well as mesh, shrugs off wet towels, and — the eliminator — machine washes when the season's grime peaks. It's not close, honestly.
The spec that matters on sand
Capacity for the family reality (towels for four, water, snacks, the kraken of sunscreen bottles — our 51×35×13 cm totes swallow it), 12oz-plus fabric so the load doesn't fold the bag, long handles that shoulder over a cover-up, and colors that hide what the beach does.
