Somewhere behind your car, two screws have been fusing with their nuts since the Obama administration, waiting for the day you buy a new frame. Rusted plate screws defeat muscle constantly and method never — the difference is an escalation ladder climbed in order, with patience at the bottom and a drill at the top.
Step one: chemistry and time
Penetrating oil (PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench — not WD-40, which displaces water but barely penetrates rust) sprayed on the screw and, crucially, on the nut side behind the bumper where the corrosion actually lives. Wait fifteen minutes minimum; overnight is better. Tap the screw head a few times with the screwdriver handle — shock cracks rust bonds oil can then creep into.
Step two: downforce, not fury
Stripping happens when the bit cams out, and bits cam out from spinning without pressure. Correct-size bit (screws strip from wrong sizes more than rust), seat it hard, push with most of your weight, turn slow. A manual impact driver — the tap-with-a-hammer kind, €15 — converts strikes into twist and wins most stalemates right here.
Steps three and four: the stripped-head rescues
Already chewed? A wide rubber band between bit and head fills the wound and often grants one good turn — that's all you need. Failing that, screw-extractor bits (reverse-threaded, bite as they spin) are the purpose-built answer. Locking pliers on any proud screw head skip the slot entirely.
Step five: the drill-out endgame
Drill into the head's center with a bit sized near the screw shaft; the head pops off, the plate lifts away, and the shaft usually spins out by pliers with the tension gone. Plastic nut carriers behind the bumper are €2 replacements — sacrifice them without ceremony.
Then never again
Rebuild with stainless hardware and a dab of anti-seize (the hardware guide), mount the new frame properly (install walkthrough — ours are waiting), and future-you inherits screws that simply unscrew. The whole ladder exists so you only climb it once.
