Universal-fit car seat covers come in four standard configurations: single bucket cover, double front cover (bench seats), 60/40 rear bench cover, and full-set configurations. Picking the right configuration depends on your seat type — bucket vs. bench, split vs. one-piece, 5-seat vs. 7-seat. Below: how to identify your seats, how to measure, and the decision tree for which covers to buy.
The 4 standard cover types
1. Single bucket cover
Fits: individual bucket seats — one driver, one passenger. Most modern sedans, SUVs, and trucks have bucket fronts.
Dimensions: typically fits seats 17.5"–22" wide.
Use: buy 2 for the front (driver + passenger). Buy more for individual rear bucket seats (mid-row of some 3-row SUVs).
Solara pricing: $63.69 per single cover.
2. Double front cover
Fits: continuous bench front seats — full-width benches in older trucks, vans, work vehicles, and some commercial vehicles.
Dimensions: fits benches up to ~60" wide.
Use: buy 1 for the front bench. Doesn't apply if you have buckets.
Solara pricing: $76.92.
3. Rear bench cover (60/40 split)
Fits: standard rear bench seat with 60/40 split fold (most modern SUVs, sedans, trucks with rear seats).
Use: buy 1 set for the rear. Cover comes as two pieces matching the 60/40 split.
Solara pricing: included in full set, ~$77 separately.
4. Full set configurations
5-seat full set: 2 single fronts + 1 rear bench (60/40). For most sedans, SUVs, and crossovers.
7-seat full set: 2 single fronts + middle row split + 3rd row split or singles. For 3-row SUVs (Pilot, Highlander, Telluride, etc.) and large vans.
Bench-front + rear: 1 double-front + 1 rear bench. For trucks with bench fronts and rear seats.
How to identify your seat type
Look at your front seats:
Bucket seats:
- Two separate seat shapes
- Center console between them (or at minimum, a gap)
- Each seat individually adjustable
- Most modern cars from 2000+
Bench seats (full):
- One continuous cushion across the front
- No separation
- Common in older trucks and vans
40/20/40 split bench:
- Looks like a bench but has a fold-down center seat
- Center 20 doubles as a console when folded down
- Common in modern work trucks
Now look at your rear seats:
60/40 split bench:
- Bench that folds in two unequal sections (60% on one side, 40% on the other)
- Seam visible between the two sections
- Most modern sedans, SUVs, trucks
One-piece rear bench:
- Bench that folds as one unit
- Older sedans and trucks
- Some compact cars
Captain's chairs (mid-row):
- Two individual seats with aisle between them
- Some 3-row SUVs and minivans
- Treat as bucket seats — buy 2 single covers
Power-fold rear (luxury SUVs):
- Buttons control the fold
- Usually in the 3rd row of luxury SUVs
- Some configurations don't accept universal covers — see compatibility guide
How to measure your seat
For sizing certainty, measure with a tape measure:
Bucket seats:
- Width: widest point of the cushion (usually right where your hips sit)
- Depth: front edge to seatback
- Bolster height: how far the side bolsters protrude above the cushion
Solara fits:
- Width: 17.5"–22"
- Depth: 18"–22"
- Bolster: 0"–4"
If your seat falls outside these ranges, you may be in the 7% that don't fit universal.
Bench seats:
Width: total width across the bench
Solara double-front fits up to 60" wide.
Rear benches:
- Total width: across the bench
- Total depth: front to back
- Split point: where the 60/40 (or 50/50) seam is
Most rear benches fall within universal sizing.
Single bucket cover — what it fits
A single bucket cover fits one individual bucket seat. Think of it like a fitted sheet for one car seat.
Fits well:
- Standard bucket seats in sedans, SUVs, trucks
- Captain's chairs in minivans
- Individual rear bucket seats in 3-row SUVs
Doesn't fit:
- Bench seats (use double-front instead)
- Race buckets with deep bolsters (universal-fit limit)
- Integrated booster seats (custom-fit needed)
Configuration logic:
- 2 fronts = 2 single covers
- 4-seat sedan with rear bench = 2 fronts + 1 rear bench cover
- 5-seat SUV = 2 fronts + 1 rear bench
- 7-seat 3-row SUV = 2 fronts + 2 mid-row singles + 2 third-row singles (or rear bench cover for the third row)
Double front cover — bench seats and pickup trucks
A double front cover fits a continuous bench seat across the full front of the vehicle.
Fits:
- Older work trucks (pre-2009 F-150, Silverado, Ram with bench)
- Older vans with bench fronts
- 40/20/40 split benches when used as a single piece (hides the split)
Doesn't fit:
- Bucket seats
- Benches wider than ~60"
- Modern integrated-belt benches (need custom)
Pricing: $76.92 for Solara's double-front cover.
Rear bench cover — 60/40 splits and one-piece benches
The rear bench cover system covers the back seat. Comes in two parts:
- Bottom cushion cover
- Backrest cover (often pre-cut for split)
Configuration logic:
- 60/40 split bench: 2-piece cover system
- One-piece bench (older cars): single-piece cover
- Power-fold benches: may need custom
For Solara's 60/40 split rear bench cover, the cover comes as a matched 2-piece set that fits the standard split. The cover handles fold-flat function — tucks naturally with the seat fold.

FAQ
Can I mix a single cover and a double cover on the same bench?
Generally no — looks visually inconsistent. Either use the right configuration or accept the visual mismatch.
What if my truck has 40/20/40 bench but I want one cover, not three?
A double-front cover hides the split and looks like one continuous bench. Functional but the split sections still flip down individually.
My 3-row SUV's third row folds flat into the cargo floor — can I cover it?
Yes, with caveats. The cover stays in place when folded but may bunch slightly. Adjust as needed when raising the seats.
Captain's chairs — what cover do I need?
Single bucket covers, one per chair. They're individual seats despite being in the rear.
My van has a swivel seat in front — can I cover it?
Yes. Treat as a bucket seat. Universal single-seat cover fits.
Does the cover include the seat cushion AND the backrest?
Yes. Each Solara cover includes both the seat back and seat bottom in one connected piece.
Verdict
Match cover configuration to your seat type:
- Buckets → single covers (1 per seat)
- Bench front → double-front cover
- 60/40 rear → rear bench cover system
- 5-seat car → full set
- 7-seat 3-row → 7-seat full set
When in doubt, measure your seats and check our compatibility guide. The refund policy covers the rare miss.
